Business – Auction for new IPL franchises by first week of March: Modi
MUMBAI: The auction for two new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises will take place in either the last week of February or in the first week of March.
IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi made this announcement during a media briefing. “We want the two new franchises to come in before the start of the third season. We want them to get adjusted to the scheme of things. Their inputs would also be valuable.”
Modi also announced that the Opening match for IPL 3.0 as well as the opening ceremony will now take place in Mumbai instead of Hyderabad. However, Hyderabad still gets the gate receipts for that match as it is their home match.
“Security is paramount for us. For each venue we have a fallback programme if a change has to be made. We had considered Kolkata but the stadium is being constructed. We had also looked at Bangalore but they have already hosted two Opening Ceremonies. It is important for us to give another city a chance to do the honours. As of now no other changes have been made in the schedule. Franchises want to play in Andhra Pradesh and the situation there is developing,” says Modi.
Further elaborating, Modi says that there is still time for the IPL to decide on the modalities for franchises retaining players once the third season is over. A fresh auction will take place once the second season of the Airtel Champions twenty20 League has occurred.
