Sport – “Robbed” Massa wants Singapore 2008 result scrapped

SAO PAULO: The 2008 Singapore Grand Prix result should be scrapped, Felipe Massa insisted Thursday, saying Renault driver Nelson Piquet junior’s
deliberate crash and team-mate Fernando Alonso’s subsequent win had “robbed” him of glory.

“All of what happened was robbery – but regarding the race nothing has happened, the result remains the same. This is not right,” said Ferrari ace Massa.

“The robbery changed the outcome of a championship and I lost (the title),” Massa told Globo television.

Alonso, who started from 15th place on the grid, won the race after the safety car came out following Piquet’s crash. Alonso had already pitted and was left at the front once the safety car period ended.

Piquet, sacked by Renault in August, then revealed that team chief Flavio Briatore and chief engineer Pat Symonds ordered him to crash.

Last month Briatore and Symonds both quit as the team announced they would not contest the allegations.

Renault were handed a suspended ban at a hearing in Paris while Briatore was banned from the sport for life.

But the result of the race remains unchanged and that means Massa has to reflect on how he lost out in the driver’s standings to eventual champion Lewis Hamilton by a solitary point.

Hamilton finished in third place in the race while Massa, who had started on pole came home in 13th.

“I have seen in football how a referee took money to throw a game and all the suspect results were annulled,” said Massa.

“In Italy, Juventus were relegated. But here (in Formula One) they just sent Briatore home. I don’t get it and I don’t think it was right.”

Two-time world champion Alonso will drive alongside Massa next season after it was revealed on Wednesday he will join Ferrari.

The Spaniard and Massa have had a difficult relationship since a spat at Monza three years ago.

And after the 2007 European Grand Prix they roundly insulted each other in full earshot of broadcasters.

On Thursday Massa, recuperating following his crash in July at the Hungarian Grand Prix, briefly and coolly greeted Piquet Jr at a kart circuit in Sao Paulo.
