Business – Air India Stops Ticket Bookings as 180 Pilots Take Sick Leave

NEW DELHI — National carrier Air India said Tuesday it has canceled ticket bookings indefinitely as 180 pilots have taken sick leave to protest the airline’s plan to cut their incentives
Senior Air India pilots have been reporting sick since Saturday in protest against a proposed cut in productivity-linked incentives by up to 50% for more than 7,000 officers.

“PLI (productivity-linked incentive) has jumped in two years to 15 billion rupees a year from 10 billion rupees ($210),” Air India Chairman and Managing Director Arvind Jadhav told reporters.

“The company has lost immensely in these two years. Fuel has become expensive. Yields have come down and efficiency has gone down, but incentives have gone up,” he said. “This is a paradoxical situation.”

Ticket bookings have slumped to 14,000 per day from 32,000 due to the protest by the pilots, Mr. Jadhav said, adding, daily revenue has declined to 120 million rupees from 400 million rupees.
